About image compression

This tool shrinks your images by re-encoding them with a different quality setting and (optionally) a different format. The goal is to keep them looking almost the same while reducing file size.

Format

“Keep original (auto)” keeps the format for each image. You can also force JPEG, PNG, WebP or AVIF if you need a specific type.

Quality

Lower quality gives smaller files but can introduce artifacts. Around 70–85 is usually a good balance for photos.

Max width / height

If set, the image is resized so that it fits within these limits while preserving aspect ratio.

Per-image quality

Lets you fine-tune the quality for each file instead of using one global value.

Target size compression

This feature compresses the image based on your target size, automatically choosing the optimized compression quality needed to stay close to that size.

Bulk actions

You can either compress and download in one step, or (with the setting.enabled) compress everything first and download all compressed files later.

Tip: start with a higher quality and step down until the preview looks acceptable. That usually gives the smallest file size without visible damage.

Image compressor FAQ

Is this image compressor free to use?+

Any compression removes some data, but with a quality level around 70–85 you usually get much smaller files with no visible loss for most photos. You can preview and adjust knobs until you are happy with the result.

Which formats does WillCompress support?+

Right now you can compress JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF images. You can also change the output format if you want, for example from PNG to WebP or AVIF for smaller files.
